All about the Festival

When Is It?

The Wokingham Children’s Book Festival will be held on the weekend of Saturday October 14th to Sunday October 15th. Put a note in your diary and don’t forget to book some events!

What is it?

A two day festival where you can meet and listen to talks by authors of children’s books. Learn about the process of writing and have a lot of fun!

Meet The Authors

There will be 13 events where you can meet authors giving sessions on subjects such as the writing process and their characters.

What does it cost?

In person tickets remain at £3 per seat. You will be able to buy books at the event courtesy of independent bookshop Fourbears.

10am –Super Silly Museums with Nick Sharratt for 3 to 7 year olds

Sunday 15th October – Wokingham Town Hall

9.45am – Animal Stories with Holly Webb for 5 to 9 year olds
11:15am – The Hypnotic World of Molly Moon and Albi The Glowing Cow Boy with Georgia Byng for 7 to 12 year olds
1:30pm – Finding Blackbeard’s treasure with Iszi Lawrence for 7 to 12 year olds
3pm – A journey through the world of Serendib with Nizrana Farook for 7 to 12 year olds

10am – Introducing … Vita and the Gladiator with Ally Sherrick for 8+ years old
10.15am – The Beasts Beneath our Feet with James Carter for 6 to 11 year olds
11:30am – Let’s Get Inventing with Zanna Davidson for 4 to 7 year olds
11:45am – Mystery Makers with Gareth P Jones for 6 to 11 year olds
1:15pm – Storm Horse with Jane Elson for 9 to 13 year olds
1:45pm – Fox’s Favourite Autumn with Fiona Barker for 3 to 7 year olds
2:45pm – Magic and Mystery Poems with Clare Bevan for 7 to 11 year olds
3:15pm – Character drawing with Rikin Parekh for 5 to 8 year olds

Spaces are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. For advice and help with booking online please contact us

Bookseller

Each workshop is followed by a book signing and we are pleased to announce that Fourbears will be our official bookseller with stalls at each venue. Fourbears can take card payments. There are many cash points available in the Town. Nearest to the Town Hall are HSBC, or Barclays. Nearest to the Library is Lloyds TSB.   

Joining your event

Wokingham Town Hall (RG40 1AS) is in the centre of Wokingham, 5 to 10 mins walk from Wokingham Railway Station and less than 5 mins walk from the Broad Street bus stops. Nearest car parks are Cockpit Path and Denmark Street. There is also a large multi story in the Carnival Development just over 5 mins walk from the Town Hall. There is limited on street disabled parking outside the Town Hall.

Please enter via the Book Festival marked entrance of the Town Hall for tickets to be checked. We will be operating a one way system through the building, where ever possible.

Wokingham Library (RG40 2AF) is in the new Carnival development. Just over 5 mins from Wokingham Town Hall. It is 5 mins walk from Wokingham Railway Station and nearest bus stops. Nearest car park is Carnival Multi story.

Authors and Illustrators

Nick Sharratt

Much-loved illustrator Nick Sharratt will be taking you on a guided tour of the most magnificently silly museums you’ll ever visit, in this giggle-fest session packed with jokes, puns and drawing activities.

Iszi Lawrence

Iszi Lawrence takes you on a swashbuckling adventure through history in her book Blackbeard’s Treasure. Find out about and the REAL pirates of the Caribbean, including everything from why they were there, what they were like and where they pooed.

Holly Webb

Holly Webb is one of Britain’s best-loved children’s writers. She has written over a hundred books for children and her work has been translated into over thirty languages.

Nizrana Farook

Join Nizrana Farook, best-selling author of The Girl Who Stole an Elephant and The Boy Who Saved a Bear, as she takes you on a journey through the world of her books.

Georgia Byng

Join Georgia Byng to see why you are a writer too. This is a fun talk about ideas and characters, about stories and words and different worlds. From magic monsters to hypnotic children to glowing animals with lots in between. Come along to be inspired and entertained.

Jane Elson

Storm Horse is the tale of two boys. Twelve-year-old Daniel Margate who lives today on the Beckham Estate and has the gift of dyslexic alternate thinking, and twelve-year-old Cuthbert H Brown Junior who lived in a car in the 1930’s Great Depression in the USA.

Ally Sherrick

Let Ally transport you on a nail-biting journey back in time to Roman London. Meet Vita and Brea, the brave heroes of her new book, ‘Vita and the Gladiator’ and discover how they end up fighting for their lives against a shared enemy in the city’s great gladiatorial arena.

James Carter

Even met a mad scientist? James Carter – award-winning children’s poet, non-fiction writer and musician – may be the closest you’ll ever get.

Come on down and for a buzzy and highly interactive session full of poetic and musical madcappery not to mention a very lively reading of James’s dino fest THE BEASTS BENEATH OUR FEET!

Zanna Davidson

Zanna Davidson will read from the story, talk about child-inventors and encourage the children to come up with their own amazing inventions.

Gareth P. Jones

Join children’s author/performer Gareth P Jones in creating a brand new who-done-it where you, the audience plot the story, play the suspects, discover the clues and solve the mystery! Expect live music, fast rapping, jokes, frenetic improvised storytelling, werewolves, the odd zombie clown & a big twist ending.

Fiona Barker

Fiona will be introducing ‘Fox’s Favourite Autumn.’ Join Fox as he tries to do everything to stop Autumn from slipping by and eventually learns that each season has its magic.

Clare Bevan

Clare is a local author who has written many books for children, and whose poems have been published in over a hundred children’s anthologies. Clare fell in love with poetry when she was very young. She started writing poetry of her own and one poem about the horrors of hockey was printed in the school magazine.

Rikin Parekh

Rikin studied art at the Camberwell College of Arts and the University of Westminster. He has since worked designing monsters for the film industry and selling books for a national chain.
